September New Jersey Prayer
Retreat with Toby Manimalethu
On Saturday, September 30th, 2006, NAKYO had a prayer retreat at the St. Thomas Knanaya Church in New Jersey. Although, around 30 teens attended the retreat, we were hoping for more participants. Our very gifted speaker was Toby Manimalethu of Detroit, MI, whose main focus of the day was "to help us prepare a life in eternity with God". The retreat was divided into sessions with the youth singing songs in between each session.
Some of the points Toby mentioned were:
When you're sick or in trouble, think of this saying, which is in reference to Jesus, "By your beating, I am healed".
You spend time and talk with the people you love, so why not do the same with Jesus?
If you're able to enjoy Jesus, then everything around you will be enjoyable as well.
Prayer is communicating with God; it involves both speaking and listening.
Here's the way to pray when you are alone (ACTS):
Adoration – praise God.
Confession – tell God about your sins.
Thanksgiving – thank God for what he has given you.
Supplication – now, ask God for what you need.
Here are some Bible quotes, and passages that Toby discussed:
Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a
light to my path - Psalm 119:105
...You
need two things in your life: Food (Jesus) and Light (the Bible)
Proverbs 28:13 - He who
conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and
forsakes them will obtain mercy.
Psalm 15 - describes the character of a good Christian.
